Herb of the Moon
Why herb of the moon?
Why not?  I mean really, what’s the Julian Calendar got to do with it.  I believe much of what ails us as a
society has to do with our concept and obsession with time as well as the fact that we have divorced
ourselves from the natural world and the Earth as a whole organism.  Most of us living in modern society
have become slaves to an unnaturally measured system of time.  We allow it to dissect our days into hours,
minutes, seconds.  Our years into unnatural months containing an inconsistent number of days.  Months that
do not follow a natural flow or order and run contrary to any type of internal or intuitive rhythm.  Although
we have separated ourselves from the “beasts” (although some would argue this point) our innate nature is
still "wild".  In this context  "wild" meaning "natural" or of this Earth.    I believe it is our complete and utter
denial of this fact that is at the root of many of our ills; physical, mental, emotional and most importantly
spiritual.

Nature is beautiful in the true meaning of the word.  Everything in it  has a rhythm and an order all its own.
If you allow yourself to be present and silent in nature you will begin to become aware of this rhythm.
Nothing is hurried or forced.  Everything flows as it should.  Everything works in harmony and fits in with
everything else.  As you notice this order more and more, it becomes easier to see how out of balance we as
human beings  are.  Doesn't it make more sense to awaken with the rising of the Sun rather than the buzzing
of an alarm clock?  Or to eat tomatoes in July rather than February?  And don't we all just want to hibernate
a little and turn within as the days darken allowing our Spirits to provide us with nourishment during the
colder times of the year?

I believe that if we can begin to restore some of this natural flow to our lives, we can regain our health and
wholeness in its entirety; physical, mental, emotional and spiritual.  Becoming aware of the moon is  a  simple
way to begin tuning back into this natural cadence.  The moon's phases are often visible in the night sky and
as such, make it easy to follow its course and flow.  As we do this, we feel the natural connection that exists
within all of us.  We reestablish that innate connection within all of us.

Plants living in the natural world, in this instance, herbs are another great way to begin to reconnect with
this internal flow.  Studying and working with the herbs in their natural habit allows you to see their cycles
and feel their energy and rhythms.

As it is that plants respond to the moon's phases, it is natural to speak of plants in this context.  Ancient
peoples often planted according to the moon's phases and some still do.  Much harvesting is also done to the
moon's phases as these phases have a tremendous affect on the potency of plants and herbs.

So again, why herb of the moon?  Because I believe that to speak of herbs without speaking of the
environment in which they live, breathe and have their being in some way betrays the practice.   To speak of
herbs in the context of only what "disease" they are used to heal turns the practice into little more than
another form of allopathic medicine  and completely misses the point.

When it comes to coming back into balance and harmony with the Earth, the plants know more about the
cycles of the Earth, moon, stars, planets and seasons than we will ever know.  So let us learn from them and
become aware even in some small way of the natural cycles that are ever present all around us.  Waiting for
the day when we will truly wake up and step back into what we all innately long for.  Peace, balance,
harmony.

Below  you will find links for each new moon of the year.  Each  new moon I will cover a different herb
providing insights and inspiration to begin to look at common "weeds" in an entirely new way.  Please feel
free to email me your comments and any ideas or suggestions that you may have.  I hope  you will enjoy
reading as I share my experiences with the green world.  Happy reading!
